Ok I got pure udev, I got dbus working, it even starts on boot. I got hal working with 1 minor irritation, the boot script doesn't sem to start the daemon, I have to do it myself, not a biggy. I got hal-device-manager showing my a very nice list of my hardware, more info than I could every need in there, this is all cool.

Now I want my usb stick to be mounted when I plug it in. I don't want to use gnome-volume-manager, that would mean installing gnome, besides I dont always have the X running.

This should be a function of hal, but I can't for the life of me find where it says how you do it. I've asked in the hal mailing list, and go no responses, not even "this is a dev list not a FFAQ!!"

Can anyone point me at a nice doc that explains this? Thank you and end rant.[/quote]

hal is just a library that exposes certain events like things being plugged in and out. To take advantage of it you need some other program, and the only one that's been written so far is gnome-volume-manager.

Ahhh I was hopin that wasn't the case. I would be quite happy to write such an app, but I took one look at the source of GVM, realised it uses gtk for the signal handling and gave up. If someone wants to give me an intro to signals, or if I get the time to wander around the hal source I may give it another shot.

Hi,

I'm working on a little HAL-related project (see sig). I'd like to get USBstick mounting implemented too, but I only have very old hardware, so I dont even have an USB port...
If you'd like to work with me on this, please feel free to contact me!!!

Ahh...may just do. I'l have a look at ivman tonight, I can test it with a rather strange usb memory stick.

If I can find some time I might be able to help too. (thats a big if at the moment though)

Thats right it, your stick won't mount, there is no support for USB devices at all (yet), because I need a testing machine for that...
Only cdroms and audio cd's are supported (last one only in CVS). DVD's should start to playback soon too.

Hmm, what do you need? A girlfriend, or userspace mounted USB sticks and optical devices?
Life is all about making choices...

There's an ivman-devel mailing list now, look on the project page. Join it if you're interested!
