Enable hotplugging and compile modules for most USB options, or boot to your genkernel setup and do an lsmod and take note of which modules your Cable Modem is using.

No, enable general hotplugginf (one level above pci hotplug)

I am also fighting with this same issue. I have a docsis cable modem (motorola surfboard 4220) which is working fine using an ethernet cable (so use the ethernet port you say... where's the fun in that?)

Any how I don't have it working yet, but this is what I gather so far

In addition to having hotplugging enabled in the kernel, you need (for docsis cable modem) usb supprt (uhci if via or intel, ohci for amd, nvidida, compaq, and most others), an ethernet usb module (CDCEther in 2.4 or usbnet and CDC support in 2.6 kernel)

You need to emerge hotplug and...

this is where I'm stuck. My system registers the hotplug event when the usb cable is plugged or disconnected, but the module is not associated with the device.

Maybe, hopefully, two heads are better than one

Are you using udev or devfs? Udev might not have support for this device at present. It's still having growing pains like that. That could explain why the event is registered but no action is taken.
