Give me MAME, or give me death!
Pac-Man, Centipede, Asteroids, Pole Position, Dig-Dug, Galaga, Marble Madness, Paperboy, Rampage, Joust, Defender, KLAX, Gyruss.. and that's not counting the ton of good games that were only released for the home consoles of yore.
Someone in Slashdot, responding to a post that said the old games are better, asked if that person actually does spend more time playing older games. I do, in fact, spend more time playing older games.
Still, there are a handful of newer games that I like. I've got Gran Turismo 3, Tekken 4, and ATV Off-Road Fury for the PlayStation2, and all three of the Descent series for the PC (I said "newer," not "new"). _________________ Proud to be a... eh, forget it.

All of these style games morphed into NWN/Baldurs, Myst, and Morrowwind. Although I do miss Liersure Suit Larry I enjoy thier decendant games more. _________________ <oz> i wonder if i can get a gentoo as a pet

I have always liked Heroes of Might and Magic -games and I also like playing games made by Blizzard and of course ID Software's games.
My list would be:
Heroes of Might and Magic games
Warcraft 3 + Expansions (works well with winex)
Diablo 2 + Expansion (also works perfectly with winex)
Enemy Territory |

I guess my 'all time favorite' would go to Civilization II (Civ3 is almost the same game, but I've played Civ2 a lot more).
Lemmings the Tribes 2 was my favorite game on the Amiga, followed closely by Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge. Wizardry 6 was nice in that it's not as complicated as Wizardry 7, but has more character then Wizardry 8 (and most modern games). I wish games like Neverwinter would have more fun and humor like Wizardry did. I think this is the important difference between older games and the current ones. That and the poor graphics but descriptive texts of games like Wizardry 6 let you use your imagination a lot more.
Also an Amiga game called Future Classics was fun... 6 different games, the majority well done.
Though I have to say that Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is freakin' beautiful and quite fun. It gave me a reason to boot up Windows for the first time in months (and install new antivirus software and apply ~30 critical updates, ain't windows great? ). The original Prince of Persia was really hard and frustrating... I never got beyond level 4 or 5. Granted, I was like 10. |

It's pretty easy for me, Space Federation ofcourse!
It's a 2player basic strategy-spacegame, very old, very nice.
Transport Tycoon is not that bad either btw _________________ // yosi |

Hmmm, so many games I enjoy playing. Lately, I've really gotten hooked on Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. But, since I rarely boot up into Windows any more, I'm mostly playing UT2K4 and Neverwinter Night. My favorite games, ever, though are all the Descent games, and both Thief games.

I know its an older game, but I've just discovered Operation Flashpoint (GOTY) and I love it! Unfortunately, it doesn't run properly for me in Linux - most of the textures are screwed/missing. _________________ There is no evil greater than that committed by those who claim to do their deeds in the name of God.

7. Fury of the Furries
8. Lost Vikings
9. Speedball 2

Interesting to see all the interest in the X-Com games - those guys obviously got something right! wolf31o2 mentioned UFO-AI in a previous post - there's also UFO2000. (I've been looking at both recently!) |

Medieval: Total War is still something what I really would like to play, if it still worked. I'm little bitter about the fact that it doesn't work with DX9.*/8.* + my computer. It's so damn good game.
On Linux-only -side I like really much from the Battle for Wesnoth and from roguelikes. Nethack is superb.
There's other games too. Baldur's Gate 2 + ToB is an amazing game. Too bad that I can't get BG2's sounds working in linux (with wine, of course). |

Yeah you should definitely check these out if you're into strategy games. Especially if you like history.
Have you got these to work under Gentoo? I haven't even tried yet, just would like to know... |

I have to say, really, I'm surprised Baldur's Gate hasn't been mentioned more....
Baldur's (I & II, especially II though) and Starcraft are the best games ever... imho of course _________________ Non fa male! Non fa male! |

Doom!
There is no other.
Actually I still play doom, I really like the legacy rewrite (emerge doomlegacy. start with llxdoom -opengl). They are currently porting it all to c++, looks promissing. |
