MB Suggestions

I have been thinking about building myself a new server to replace my K6-2 333 running Linux From Scratch. I am asking that if you guys have any motherboard suggestions, combinations of hardware that work under gentoo and are easy to set up. I don't know if I want to start out with SATA, or just use ATA100/133. My server isn't needing to be high preformance - and my budget is quite limited. I was only wanting to spend a < $70 on the motherboard - I am definitely running AMD Athlon XP (prolly 2000+ - 2600+).

Here are the motherboard brands that I will use:
MSI, EpoX, Asus - I would probably prefer MSI

I'll probably just get some cheezy video card that is at a bargain basement price - any suggestions.

And the whole issue with SATA is getting kernel 2.6 installed - my last attempt on my Windows machine (AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 333Mhz FSB, Asus-Tek A7N8X-DX Motherboard, 80GB Serial ATA HD) ended up with many many errors trying to write to the drive (Using LiveCD 1.4 - haven't gotten around to 2004.0 yet). Any suggestions, should I stick with ATA100/133 or jump up to SATA - and any words to the wise about the whole issue.

I am looking for overall compatibility with Linux. This is going to be a multi-talented server (Apache2 + PHP, Maybe Tomcat, MySQL, Samba3, SSH, Maybe Email, etc)

Has anybody had any experience with the MSI KT6V-LSR or KT4AV-L Motherboards?

hmm. don't know. i have myself msi i865 p4 mb with CoreCell (tm) chip :lol:

if anyone know how you can get it work under linux. CC control automatically fan speeds etc under Window$ software. Maybe some basic mb works fine without all kind of "candy".

I run a small computer sales and repair business and use nothing but MSI boards. Never had a dead one and have yet to have one go dead. I have used both boards you listed and the KM4M-L, which I would recomend for a budget system. Just built a system with that and a 2600+ XP. It would be way overkill for a small home server, very fast, but why not. On board video, lan, and sound. All work with linux. $56 at newegg.
