just wondering as sortof a split from this thread.

Normally i have about 80 procs running.

DE: Gnome 2.6

i do not leave apps open other than gaim, i use virtual desktops as excessive space for when the first gets cluttered.

My desktop (KDE 3.2.2) has 70.
My file server has 37.
My mail, squid, web, and almost everything server has 67
And my firewall 27.

(hmmm... too many 7's there 8O)

EDIT: fixed typos.

Depends what I'm doing... I just counted my running procs and had 47 (including firefox, a couple of torrent downloads, GAIM, irssi, rhythmbox, and nano) but on a fresh startup i hardly have any running... less than 20 I guess.

I have 43 right now; I'm sure NPTL helps (else Firefox would kick it to 47 easily), this is a light load in the sense I'm not editing/playing music/doing stuff as root, I use Window Maker instead of a DE, and it's not a megaserver. So I'd say 50-70 is probably normal, give or take a few...

Desktop: 53, running Firefox, XMMS, Rox, 2 GKrellms, LICQ, Fluxbox.
Server: 73

Edit:
Why does everybody have more procs on the desktop than on the server when it's the other way round for me? :o

Yup. Gotta love NPTL.

It's gone up to 68 now, since I started a kernel compile.

110 on my system...

I use it for everything though. Server, desktop, test box. I need another computer. I will probably get one this summer :). Also, many apps spawn multiple processes, like mythtv and mysql. I really need another box so I can separate my personal files from a computer running software that is traditionally not secure (web, ftp, sql).

KDE with konqueror, a few kwrites, a kmail, a firefox, amsn, xmms and an emerge running and vixie-cron just started updatedb.

Quite high, if you ask me.
