is this a kernel you compiled during install or afterwards? once you boot into the livecd remember to mount your partitions and you should be able to copy the system.map from there.

Try
Code:
mount $YOUR_ROOT_PARTITION /mnt/gentoo
mount $YOUR_BOOT_PARTITION /mnt/gentoo/boot

followed by
Code:
cd /mnt/gentoo/usr/src/linux

or
Code:
ls /mnt/gentoo/usr/src/linux

or
Code:
ls -l /mnt/gentoo/usr/src/linux/

Note the trailing slash.

Also, take a look at
Code:
man ln

later on to review the basic concept of a symbolic link.

are you sure you've mounted the partitions?

do
Code:

cd /usr/src/
ls

I think your simlink is pointing at the wrong dir

Is this a new feature of Linux 2.6? System.map is not needed to boot a system on 2.4 kernels.

I believe that the system.map is for debugging purposes in case of a kernel oops, but I think your problem here is that your symlink is wrong.

what are the entire contents of your /usr/src folder? From your posts it sounds like it's just the symlink and no directorys?
Code:

mount /dev/hd?? /mnt/gentoo
cd /mnt/gentoo/usr/src
ls -l

what does that show? for example mine is:
Code:

nate@natescomp nate $ cd /usr/src
nate@natescomp src $ ls -l
total 5
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           30 Apr 16 08:44 linux -> /usr/src/linux-2.6.3-gentoo-r1
drwxr-xr-x   16 root     root          808 Feb  1 11:44 linux-2.4.22-gentoo-r5
drwxr-xr-x   16 root     root          624 Feb 19 06:15 linux-2.4.22-gentoo-r7
drwxr-xr-x   19 root     root         1432 Apr 17 08:48 linux-2.6.3-gentoo-r1
drwxr-xr-x   18 root     root          664 Mar  9 03:00 linux-2.6.3-gentoo-r2
nate@natescomp src $

I believe reading somewhere that there is a search path for system.map which includes /usr/src/linux/System.map as well as /boot/System.map; the reason the install guide says to copy it is that backups are good. I don't think it will keep the kernel from booting if it can't find it.

Hope that helps
