Does anyone have a rec for a cheap webcam on Linux? I'm running a 2.6.5 kernel if that effects anything.
Also, I'm not real picky about quality (hence cheap), just as long as you can make out a picture. I have a nice Nikon digital camera I use for snapshots, and I'm still a 35mm man when it comes to proper "photographs". This is more for just some ideas I wanted to toy with involving GStreamer and for occasional Gnome Meeting use.
Thanks! |

The Logitech and Philips cameras are generally quite good quality and cheap too. See a colleague's site at http://www.personal.rdg.ac.uk/~vis96rcf/webcam/ for some examples of the output from these cams.

Yeah, I'd agree with Logitech. They make decent webcams for cheap, and they work on just about everything as far as I know. That's what I got for my parents so they wouldnt have to worry about setting it up and installing it. |

I have a Logitech webcam that I am very happy with, but keep in mind that the phillips web cam (pwc) module is no longer being maintained and is currently being ripped out of new kernel releases (Logitech web cams use Phillips drivers). This is a major bummer if you ask me, but it might be a good reason to consider a web cam that is currently supported by a kernel module that is being maintained. |

I'm not entirely sure, hopefully someone with more knowledge in this area will follow up with a post.
In recent news, it appears that the pwc module might still be alive after all. While it's still not included in the kernel, some people are having good luck with patching the kernel with the latest beta release that is designed for the 2.6.X series.
