Ok, here is my situation. I have gnome 2.6 running well on a nvidia fx card, and basically everything works. The kernel is 2.6.5. The only issue is that since I upgraded gnome, gdm does not handle screen resolutions correctly. gdm starts in 1280x1024, which is the highest resolution I have. When gnome starts, my desktop is set to 1024x768, and it works fine. However when exiting gnome back to gdm, it keeps the 1024x768 mode so the background is too large, and you can't see icons at the edge of the screen. I can cntrl-alt-+/- to change the resolution, but would prefer that it just switch back to the correct size, or adjust the background to fit.
I have been searching the forums for advice on this but nothing has turned up.
Thanks.

Code: | Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection |
Check your xorg / xfree config, and add / remove any unnecessary resolution. _________________ Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes. |

Well, yes, but that works by forcing my users to use one resolution value. I thought that gnome has a user-level screen resolution tool so that they could actually choose one. If they change the value, then gdm gets all confused.
It used to work correctly in gnome 2.4, so I am a bit perplexed that this simple functionality has gotten lost in 2.6.
Thanks for your reply, but I was hoping for a better solution.
