Ran rc-update after update system files, and stupidly overwrote some config files (such as fstab, checkroot, console fonts, rc.conf and a few others). I fixed most of them, but now that I reboot, I get:
Code:
Unable to initialize xosd. Running without onscreen display

Then, blinking cursor, I can enter text, but nothing works.

Any idea where to go on this?

Dude or dudette, if you want help, you've got to post your system info. I mean xosd? Where does it stop? What else is displayed? Do you get past Lilo? Does the kernel load?

xosd is a Xfree86 app. Which means that if it is trying to start then you must have X. I bet you have the system set to automatically log you in to a default user with a graphical environment (GNOME KDE etc.) You can always (unless things go badly) switch over to a terminal by pressing Ctrl-Alt-FX where X is a number 1-6 and then back to the graphical terminal (ie GNOME KDE etc) with Ctrl-Alt-F7.

What has happened is simply that your xsession contains a call to xosd which is screwed up. If you use gnome look in ~/.gnome/session. Delete any files containing the string xosd and all should be kosher (or remerge xosd from the terminal).
