I know my monitor's refresh rate off my dusty manual,
and I can get into X.
What I want to test is that if X is really using the same refreshrate that I set up in the config.
for example there is fbset, but I think it's not for X.
and ati-drivers' fps test tool, like fgl_gears... there is a bundle of these toolset ... , but I want the one like I described above.. |

I'm not sure, but I THINK that X will find the best value. Since he knows the allowable horizontal and vertical range, he can find the optimal value... |

Yeah, didn't think so. That would be a nice feature to see in later versions of xorg (*ahem*)...not likely to come in later versions of xfree.
By the way, beastmaster...was it you that said you were using xorg? How is it performance-wise compared to xfree? I'm planning to make the switch in the next couple of days...I'm putting it on a test system first so as not to bork my system. _________________ Gentoo...it's like wiping your ass with silk. nope, wasn't me
I'm still running xfree , the reason being it's not that I don't like xorg, it's just right now it's still not at its stable stage (only for sparc and others, but I don't have one ), and afraid that things are gonna fall apart if I take the switch too soon , considering I'm having all these nice and sweet setup... at least everything works ok
But for sure that I will upgrade to xorg in a few month when the stable release hits the portage, it's just not right now
And to nielchiano, AFAIK xorg is another cool X11 of choice beside xfree
p.s. after all the poking, I like big desktop the best also mplayer and xine work great in xinerama. |

If you use the "BIG DESKTOP" setting is it possible to get DRI working? I thought I read somewhere in this thread you can, but I can't seem to get it? |

Neither Xinerama nor ATI's "Big Desktop" won't work with DRI. I've yet to read anything that states otherwise.
Of course, I've never actually been able to get either Xinerama or "Big Desktop" to work for me, so I'm only going by what I've heard. |

that's not true, I have DRI/GLX enabled in big desktop.
glxinfo and glxgears both show they are alright.
and again, I'm using xfree though. |

I actualyl did get ti working now. It turns out I was editign the wrong XF86config and my changes were being applied. |

perhaps someone can help me. i've set up my nvidia card to have two x screens on my lcd display and my tv. so i have two desktops, two kicker applets ... works just fine. both displays "share" the same input devices, but i can't move windows between them, but thats not a problem. the problem is, when i start xine on the tv and i want to switch to fullscreen, the video doesn't get resized - it stays in its original size and i have huge black borders around it. i'm not using twinview/xinerama, its a dual head setup with two monitors, two screens in xorg.conf. any ideas how to get xine work properly?

Sounds like it may be a glitch with xorg, although I haven't jumped too deep into xorg yet, so I could be wrong. As long as you opened xine in the tv's "display", it should resize on that display...that's how xine behaves on my tv, anyway.
I would recommend starting a new thread, as your post is somewhat unrelated to this one, and you will probably get an answer quicker with a new thread than one that's 4 pages long. _________________ Gentoo...it's like wiping your ass with silk. Or sandpaper. |

i believe this is what xinerama is for. i doubt you will ever see the ability to send windows to another display in dual-display. |

I got it working, but it wasn't worth the effort for me. I got used to the dual head mode, and that's what I like. So, until xorg designs better support for xinerama, I'm just going to stick with my separate desktops. I'm having a lot of trouble trying to get my Radeon 9700 working in Big Desktop mode. It will work fine with one display but if I try and kick into Big Desktop mode it throughs the following error:

Was this file generated by the fglrxconfig script that comes with the ati-drivers? I noticed that your config file only has one monitor. You will need to make a "Monitor" section for each display, and a corresponding "Screen" section as well. Then you will need to add something like "Screen1 leftOf Screen0" depending on which side the second display is on. That should take care of your problem. _________________ Gentoo...it's like wiping your ass with silk. Or sandpaper. |

It was generated by fglrxconfig, I just removed many of the comments for readability.
I'll try adding another screen setup section but I want to run in Big Desktop mode, not Dual Head. Ideally, X would just see one big 2560x1024 screen device. I think you don't need the other screen section for that. I'll try it now anyways.

In order to have Dual Head mode up, you would need to build a second "Device" section. Big Desktop (to my knowledge) still requires a "Screen" and "Monitor" section for each display. you are correct in both. i have been playing with my options lately, and am thoroughly disappointed that the ati drivers do not support true xinerama. big desktop is ok, but it is nowhere near as flexible as true xinerama support. it does not allow for different resolutions and is not able to be supported by the window manager as the wm only thinks there is one display. maybe we should start requesting true xinerama support from ati, is anybody in this with me?
the only option i've come up with for xinerama support is to pop in a second pci video card. this seems absurd to me as my 9600xt has two outputs. i was playing with this last night, but my s3 virge video card does not support anything higher than 800x600 at 24bit. *sigh* as i've known for a while, xinerama does not support different color depths. i'm getting sick of screwing with X to get it to do what i want, and i have about 10 xorg.confs in my /etc/X11. |

I ran fgrlrxconfig again and it came up with an XF86Config-4 that had an extra monitor in it. It only had one screen section though (big desktop mode) so I copied it and changed the data as needed, ran it and got the same error.
Anyone have a working config for Big Desktop I can try? |
