irssi during installation?

ok:
I boot from the cd, set a pass for root, open a few virtual terminals, and start irssi in one of them.
I connect to my favourite server, but I get kicked out, because I am chatting as root.
I add an user, and when I start irssi as that user (su "user", then irssi), I get a message saying that the ".irssi" file in that users dir cannot be found...

and the question is: how do I chat using irssi as a non-root user?
