In our server at school this guy(technician, but not microsoft certified, he knwos win 2k server, cuz he set up a number of such) tried to get Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition running, but couldn't get it to work, then I came installed Gentoo, dhcp, samba, ldap, iptables and the network is up and running, and I haven't ever done this kind of instalation in my life, and all with help of google and this forum. Isn't it pretty amazing and together funny that they cant get 2 like operating systems (win2003 and win2k clients) to work properly, but I got 2 unlike operating systems to work pretty damn fine?

Are they letting you keep root access to the server?

yeah :) it's not a server for the whole school, just about 25-30 machines.

This is funny. Linux in general rocks. Gentoo being the best distro rocks more :)

Sweet. It's always nice if they let you administer things.
Plus it looks good on your CV. 8)

Hi,

I'm going to do something similar in my school labs next month, they have win2k for the server and clients, what I plan to do is to setup a student account, and an account for each teacher, the student account won't be able to install apps or change major settings

I'll use win2k on the clients, and Gentoo on the server connected to the Internet (firewall dhcp ...), I'd like to ask, is it possible to use Samba as a server for active directory, if not, do you recommend that I setup local accounts on each PC, or install win2k server on another server computer?

I wish I could convince them to use Linux on the clients too, but there is no way to teach the students and the teachers a new OS.

Firefox will be the default browser, and I'll hide IE (because of its security problems), I'll install every major Open Source app on the clients too.

I'm still in the design phase, thank you for your help.

You will still need IE though for updating.

You can't uninstall IE AFAIK. I'll just tell the students to use Firefox to avoid spyware and such stuff, most of them won't be able to tell the difference any way.

EDIT:

As for my main question, I guess it's possible, I found this book, thanks any way.

Interestingly, I'd have chosen Debian for the server. It's a bit more of a diligent distro when it comes to security/stability and hence more appropriate for the server usage you cite.

Wouldn't OpenBSD be better than Debian? :)

He said hide IE which is totally possible. Due to the lack of intelligence that most users of the clients will be experiencing he can delete the shortcuts and make the folder C:/program files/internet explorer a hidden folder along with setting Firefox up as the default browser.

When you launch windows update from the start menu it opens a window that uses an IE backend so you can get the updates. So yeah you can remove all the IE icons and restrict windowsupdate to administrators and you should still be safe.

Except for that and viewing video on MSNBC.com FireFox is pretty much a drop-in replacement for IE.

Google for "Best Browser" and it takes you to Mozilla.org

A quick question before I start experimenting in my home network, I'll use Samba as a domain controller, I guess it's possible to restrict IE, Control Panel, and similar stuff to admins, should I use the System Policy Editor as the book I posted suggests or Win2K Pro has a similar feature built-in?

Too much talk of using Windows. Gives me a headache just thinking about it. lol

Yeah, the System Policy Editor should do the job.

If they're all dumb enough and you setup Gentoo on the clients with XPDE.. they'll never know the difference HA HA HA! Seriously though, I've heard people say that others have fallen for the XPDE trick and did not see a difference. Suckers!

Until that the teachers request some Windows-only program to be installed.
