|
|
I was wondering, how long it is going to take, until there will be Gentoo-Sources with the 2.6-Kernel?
Right now I have a 2.4-Kernel, which won't compile anymore and so I thought, before messing with that, I could just wait, until a Gentoo-2.6-Kernel is declared stable (as updating from a 2.4-Kernel to a 2.6-Kernel needs some work, doesn't it?).
Or is it safe and recommended to use any other 2.6-kernel available? Which one do you suggest?
Just curious... thanks. |

AFAIK gentoo-dev-sources == gentoo-sources of 2.6 family. |

-> gentoo-dev-sources should give you what you are looking for; currently at 2.6.5 (although its been a while with no sign of 2.6.6 )
-> If you are feeling a little more inclined to test; then I use mm-sources. Although they give me some problems with usb with amd64.
I have seen a complete list of kernels, and the explainations for each ... but I can't remember the url, sorry.
The above are a good starting point _________________ Tyan Tiger K8W, 2xOpteron 240,Powerbook5,6 15" 1.5g, Macbook Black 2g, Mac Mini 1g, Ipod P60g.

OK, thanks a lot. I was mislead by the name "development sources", but now I read, that these are declared stable, so I will give them a try.
PS: that's amazingly quick answering |

development-sources (note !gentoo-dev-sources) is marked stable at 2.6.6-rc1 for quite some time now. I run a corporate gateway router on it, zero problems for... 31 days now.

That's not strictly true. 2.6.6 did appear briefly a while back but was pulled due to ongoing issues with one of the patches. The ebuild is still in CVS, it's just been moved into the "attic" and thus not available on any of the rsync servers:

Wow, there are more replies to my 'off the cuff' comment than the original question
Thanks; Although there appear to be issues with it, that the original poster would perhaps not wish to get into, while transfering from a 2.4 to a 2.6 kernel. Maybe?

Well I did say it had been pulled
Bug #51800 seems to be chronicling this issue and it appears that they're just going to skip 2.6.6 and are preparing for 2.6.7.
emerge gentoo-dev-source will still net you a 2.6 kernel, version 2.6.5-r1 to be exact, so unless there's something in 2.6.6 that you really need it's probably not worth worrying about. _________________ Wasurenaide...

hehe... i don't mind these "off the cuff" comments at all.
i was not looking for any particular 2.6.6 feature, so i'll just stay with whatever version i find in the portage tree |

Hmmm, I think there are some cisco patches in 2.6.6 I need to get VPN working...
Any guess as to when gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.7 will be out?
thx
