|
|
I just setup gentoo on a AMD 64. Networking was working fine during the installation, but once I rebooted I cannot get eth0 to come up.
When I try to do a Code: | /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start |
I get this message Code: | Bringing eth0 up via dhcp [!!] |
/var/log/messages shows this: Code: | dhcpStart : interface eth0 is not Ethernet or 802.2 Token Ring |
This is right after the first reboot, I haven't been able to do anything else. |

Could be a problem with your network card drivers ... are you sure you've either built the right one into the kernel or loaded it as a module? Does dmesg show your card as being found?

Yeah, I have an Asus K8V Se Deluxe and had to load the sk98lin module to use the live cd and have the module loading when I start up the system. |

are you sure it is loaded before you try to start the connection.
lsmod should have it listed. _________________ Come and play in my land |

Yep, lsmod shows it loaded, not being used by anything. |

I dug through the dmesg output and found this Code: | sk98lin : Asus mainboard with buddy VPD? Correcting Data
eht1 : Yukon Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T adapter Prefport:A RlmtMode: Check Link State |
so I did a
and it brought it online and I could ping google.com
So whats all this mean? and should I just do an Code: | rc-update add net.eth1 default |
|

Sounds like the kernel is detecting 2 network cards ... is there an eth0 line in dmesg?
Not that it matters too much i don't think ... you'll just need to edit /etc/conf.d/net so eth1 gets its IP via dhcp and then do a quick
Code: | ln -s net.eth0 net.eth1
rc-update add net.eth1 default |
as per the installation handbook and all should be good (making sure you "rc-update del net.eth0"). |

I didn't look yet, but I think eth0 might be my firewire card. I think I remember seeing something in the kernel config about firewire networking. |
