Allright.. I've been having problems getting 2.6.7 and udev to play nice..
I had some troubles with /dev/pts but a post here helped me fix it..
But here's two issues that are seriously buggering me..
I have no /sys! and I get a LONG error about user font cannot be set ..
I can only fix it by disabling that on boot but I'd like to be able to fix it..
And yes I've tried adding /sys to fstab.. /sys just plain ole doesn't exist on my system .. |

You need a 2.6 kernel to use sysfs. As far as I can tell, there's no option to enable or disable it, it's there whether you like it or not. What's the output when you try to "mount -t sysfs none /sys"?
Also, I think the phrase you want is "bugging you", not "buggering you" |

I'll boot over to Gentoo in a sec.. and Yes a friend of mine from Australia warned me about saying "buggering" ..
I just happen to like the sound of it versus bugging.. |

Hah! All I had to do was mkdir /sys
Boots fine now! .. time to figure out why my sound "works" but I get boot errors because of it..
And when i reboot it cant shut down sysklog because "process doesn't exist".. |

Eh, One more question..
I used udev per the default in Slackware..
And it gave me a SMALL /dev filled with just the stuff on my system and a nice /dev/cdrom ..
But here on Gentoo I have a massive /dev filled with stuff I've never heard of before and /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 ..
Any ideas? |

Set RC_DEVICE_TARBALL in /etc/conf.d/rc to no and add this to /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules:
Code: | BUS="ide", KERNEL="hdX", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="cdrom" |
|

I hate to seem ungrateful in any way but -neither- of those solutions worked..
1) RC_DEVICE_TARBALL wasn't IN the file.. I added it. and nothing..
Also..
2) /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules didn't exist. but 50-local.rules DID..
I edited it and added
BUS="ide", KERNEL="hdX", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="cdrom"
at the bottom and the system link did not show up..
Hmm. I've never set up udev before and Slackware was my only experience with it period.. |

1) If you're using baselayout <1.8.6.13-r1 you'll have to update or edit /etc/init.d/halt.sh and /sbin/rc.
2) You did replace the hdX with the correct value (ls -l /dev/cdroms/cdrom0)? |

Allright!
Okay - With baselayout updated /dev is slim! but..
for some reason after boot .. /boot is NOT mounted o_O
and the cdrom syslink still isn't showing . |

Why would you want /boot to be mounted after boot?
If you really have a reason for that make sure that there's no noauto in the fstab entry.
Also the cdrom syslink should work fine (WFM) as long as udev reads it before this rule:
Code: | BUS="ide", KERNEL="hd*", PROGRAM="/etc/udev/scripts/ide-devfs.sh %k %b %n", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="%c{1} %c{2}" |
And for the su problem:

BTW, seeing how outdated your baselayout was, it would probably be a good idea to update everything else too. |
