I have a Compaq 1600s Laptop that has a prolbem with the "ati" driver in X 4.x however it had run great with XFree-3.3.6's Mach64 driver. and ive been strugling with this for at least a year.

the system has a "ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage LT Pro AGP-133"
and a AMD K6-III 450mhz processor.

(a piece of junk I know, I want to replace it but... its gota do for awhile longer)

what happens.. is everything looks and runs fine till about 1 to 20 minutes later, then I get a total hard lockup of the system, a very unlinux like crash. no error messages, no logs, nothing except the screen will get brighter and brighter fadeing to white slowly sometimes... and ive shelled in remotaly and monitored it at the time of crash and it can happen when the cpu is at 100% or 0% and it dosent seam to be realated to the memory usage eather. (however I have noticed its abit more frequent with gtk apps, espeicaly changing the gtk themes...)

I have found only one work around thats, not a very good solution but the system is usable.. Option "accel" "false" in XF86Config totaly fixes the prolbem (but makes the display look awfal)

so what do you think is causing that? I found that the card I have is basicaly* a Mach64 card but its been modified for lower heat signatures. Ive tried Gatos and aftw other things but ANY sugestion may help.

Could it possibly be a heat issue? I had a problem with my laptop when I had it set to 32mb video memory, it would overheat, so i set it down to 16.

seams to do it cold, and actualy when I do large builds on it I actualy put a small fan on it.

Im thinking its like some sort of DMA 50% transparency thing that somehow goes wrong, thats just my guess.. but, knowing whats causing it dosent really fix the prolbem.
