alsa is loaded and initilized. this is what I get when I do a "ps -auxw | grep artsd"
3038 2.1 2.9 6436 3736 ? S 13:59 0:14 //usr/kde/3/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -b 16 -m artsmessage -l 3 -f
3061 0.0 0.3 1444 456 pts/0 R 14:10 0:00 grep artsd
and this is the message I get when kde is starting up
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
any idea what I'm doing wrong? |

Check your /etc/modules.devfs file and verify that you have an alias for /dev/dsp. My sound section looks like
Code: |
# Soundcard
alias /dev/sound sound-slot-0
alias /dev/audio /dev/sound
alias /dev/mixer /dev/sound
alias /dev/dsp /dev/sound
alias /dev/dspW /dev/sound
alias /dev/midi /dev/sound

Does arts interface with oss or alsa?
If it needs oss you can load the oss-emulation modules:
modprobe snd-pcm-oss
modprobe snd-mixer-oss |

Check if you have the following lines.
/etc/modules.autoload :
snd-pcm-oss
snd-mixer-oss
/etc/modules.conf :
alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-1 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-2 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-3 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-4 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-5 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-6 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-7 snd-emu10k1
You also need to unmute alsa with amixer. Please read https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=2661&highlight=audiounmute
Don't forget do change the settings for arts in kcontrol. |
