OK, i got it, thanks for the hinting...

first, i didn't have the "Configure standard features..." selected.
after that, i disabled EVERYTHING except CFQ I/O scheduler.

Built with no complaints. And yes, it rock like ninja! thanks love-guys

i just wonder where i should put the line for reiserfs in fstab or what? and what does it do? i dibnt understan when reading the page you linked too!

Code:

to enable the write barrier code for your partition/filesystem, add
"barrier=flush" for reiserfs, or "barrier=1" for ext3, to the options
for your partition. only reiserfs and ext3 work with it i think (feel free
to correct me if i am mistaken).

it gives kernel support for "atomic" writes, which means that you don't get half finished disc accesses if your box crashes. So theoretically, your filesystem should always be in a consistent state. Which means that you should never have to do another fsck again for r3 or ext3

in theory. your milage may vary as I currently use r4

I've started getting some odd things on my laptop.

I found it was running a little hot. So I checked the kernel config and discovered I hadn't set some of the APCI options. One recompile and reboot later, and I'm getting getting lots of nasty 'orrible OOPSes in reiser4 code.

I think its time for that migration back to R3. Or maybe XFS. I quite fancy trying XFS for some reason...

I was just thinking about the endless hours of entertainment making linux work offers to so many people.

Imagine if this was a Windows community: "Hey cool, I discovered a new wizard! ... I'm naming it the love-wizard!"

Random post, but the thought crossed my mind, and now it's crossed yours.

Quite so. My money's on some oddball inerference between the Toshiba ACPI code and R4.

Defnitelty R4 however - I just finished copying everything across to XFS. With the exact same kernel config (plus xfs, natch) I get no problems.

I think I'll give R4 a year to shake down and try it after that. Or maybe not. XFS seems pretty cool

If you do go with XFS, you might want to turn off 4k stacks. People on the lkml have reported problems with XFS and 4k stacks under heavy usage. The overflows can happen with the 8k stack as well, but it's harder to hit, apparently.

Unless, of course, you fancy submitting bug reports. :)

No problem. Between R4 and nvidia I never got around to turning them on. Thanks for the tip, though :D

Anyone else getting oops and segfaults with this kernel? It started with cupsd oopsing on startup. Then, Firefox started afterwards. Here is the oops from cupsd:

There is little informatio on what tcp_vegas_init is. I googled it and there is no discussion on it anywhere.

That's exactly what I did a few weeks ago, I really like the xfs file system. To show you the lack of cpu usage with xfs, do a kernel compile and when it is in full flow open up Openoffice. I saw this trick on an xfs thread and it opens in the same time as normal. Wow. With reiser4 or resierfs there is a huge slowdown due to the cpu required with those file systems.

Can't wait for reiser4 to mature a bit though.

Good luck :D

I just found this out from reading the xx-sources thread: Starting around 7/22, the newest reiser4 snapshots became more sensitive to priority, and therefore renicing reiser4 processes as we've been doing causes system lockups like the one I've been having with this love-sources version.

SO STOP RENICING REISER4!!

I've stopped doing that and all is well - thanks 8)

anyone - besides me - ever noticed "occasional hickups" with this patchset? if i close an Eterm (no compiling) or watch a movie while compiling stuff in the background (reniced to 15) i'm getting short hangs. very strange and annoying.

What about java? Does it work with this kernel? I have some problems with earlier love versions like 2.6.6 :(

I think that problem was identified and fixed a while ago (I remember reading the lkml thread about it, and I'm pretty sure Linus had a fix somewhere after 2.6.7. I assume it's still included).

It's probably the timeslice in the np scheduler set too high - In this release Nick Piggin was experimenting with the timeslice (setting it high to see how far it would go before problems occured).

Anyway, to fix it:

Change the /proc/sys/kernel/base_timeslice to 64 or 32, I have it at 32.

I wouldn't go below 32 (although I do know people with it at 16) as that actually makes it go slower (though not as slow as when it is at 512 or 256) due to the timeslice finishing too quickly, so it has to re-initiate a timeslice again, so paradoxically a very small timeslice will actually slow it down again (see my logic?).

Anyway, try changing that and see if makes a difference.

PostPosted: Wed Aug 11, 2004 7:27 am    Post subject: usb-storage doesn't work Reply with quote

for the past few love-sources I've tried, I haven't been able to get usb-storage to work.

Every time I plug in a usb stick, dmesg shows the following:-
usb 3-4: new high speed USB device using address 8
usb 3-4: device not accepting address 8, error -71
usb 3-4: new high speed USB device using address 9
usb 3-4: device not accepting address 9, error -71

and so no /dev node appears. I've also tried adding in udev and the /dev/sdX nodes appear but I can't mount any of them.

I've got the usual SCSI and USB stuff in the kernel as modules.

lsmod snippet shows scsi and usb-storage modules loaded:-
sd_mod 17792 0
vfat 12032 0
fat 40384 1 vfat
usb_storage 38272 0
scsi_mod 70208 2 sd_mod,usb_storage
ehci_hcd 26116 0
ohci_hcd 18820 0
uhci_hcd 29200 0

I know that uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd aren't meant to be loaded at the same time but I did it to see if it made any difference.

Anyone else seen this before?

UPDATE
I've noticed that if i remove the ehci-hcd (USB 2.0 module), USB storage works??? This usb stick is a usb-2 device so it does work in both usb 1.0 and 2.0 just that if i have ehci-hcd loaded, it doesn't work at all. What is weird is that even with ehci-hcd loaded, both my usb mouse and keyboard are still working the same.[/b]
