I've noticed that a lot of posts deal with particular apps/packages not running or not installing properly. Many of these problems can be solved by making sure that you do an - emerge rsync before you emerge/install any new packages. The portage tree is in a constant state of flux and this requires you to update the tree regularly. Also make sure that you have the newest version of portage installed, I've noticed that some people still use old versions which differ in syntax and use.

Another tip: to see what you can opt out/in with the USE parm in /etc/make.conf, check the contents of the .ebuild file in /usr/portage/category/package
eg. to compile evolution with palm support you have to specify "pda" ...
I think this information should be in the beginners docs... I had to compile some packages twice because I didn't know... |

I agree - there should be at least a short hint onto the most useful USE flags in the install doc or at least a decent tip to the GENTOO USE FLAG DOC. _________________ Do you want your posessions identified? [ynq] (n) |

as far as memprof goes, i have been told by another fella that it links explicitly against memprof-2.9.0.1.24 (or something similar to that) and won't link against newer versions of binutils.
Edit: found the link he pointed me to: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-list/2000-March/msg00031.html _________________ Hey um, this is my signature. |
