i feel like this is an awfully silly question, but i've lost the functionality in my PgUp/PgDn keys on my keyboard. all other keys seem to be working fine. any ideas about what might have caused this and how to test/fix it?

thanks.

Is the PgUp && PgDown are out both in console and in X, or is this only true at X ?

try using xev to see if the key command arrive at the Xserver.

weird... no signal being received by the X server. neither the PgUp nor PgDn keys show up when using xev. all other keys appear to be functional. i can't imagine why these two keys would have been singled out...

any more ideas? is there an application that might have removed the functionality of these two keys by accident?

Is this only true in the X server, or can u use it, for instance, with nano to get up/down the file ??

And what X server do u use (X.org or XFree ? )

If it's only on the Xserver, you may think of editing the keyboard layout
you've selected in your XF86config (

thanks for the help.

it looks like there are some problems. even when i back out to the command line and use nano, as you advised, there is still no functionality with the PgUp/PgDn keys. is this a guaranteed hardware failure? is there a way to "re-route" that PgUp/PgDn functionality to other less-frequently-used keys (e.g. PrntScreen or WindowsKey)?

thanks again.

I don't know from now,

Maybe you should try to boot to the gentoo liveCD and check if the keys are not aviable there too.

among many other question you should answer :
What is your hardware (laptop, desktop )
Do you remember a time when you used this keys succesfully since you've installed gentoo
If so, from when do you lost them

Are you sure of the two files :
  • rc.conf
especialy the entries : KEYMAP,SET_WINDOWKEYS,EXTENDED_KEYMAPS and CONSOLETRANSLATION

  • inputrc

thanks again for the suggestions. i'll try the liveCD when i can find my install disc. :)

the rc.conf and inputrc files look to be correct.

i'm using a dell inspiron 8100 laptop, and the pgup/pgdn keys have worked as far as i know up to about two weeks ago. weird. can't put my finger on anything that might have caused the keys to fail.

i like the liveCD suggestion though. i'll try that and report the results later. thanks again.

well, i don't know what changed, but suddenly my pgup/pgdn keys are working again?!?!

i haven't changed anything substantial in the hardware setup recently. if anything, i've been using this machine much less in the past few days. weird. thanks for the help!
