OK. This is going to sound ridiculous. How do I set up my soundcard through x and KDE?

I have successfully loaded the module and the computer recognizes my card in proc. SO how do I set it up to play?

I just transfered from MDK where everything is automated...how boring...but I am a little lost now. thanks for the help in advance?

In kde you'll probably need to unmute the mixer.

I apologize for being unclear. When I open KMixer, at the bottom it does not list my card. Untop of this, there is no volume switch (even though I checked the option to display it.) KDE does not seem to recognize my card.

Did you load the module(s) before starting X? Let's see your cat /proc/pci and lsmod.

it is definently installed and the module is loaded. I can hear sounds through my tv card (which is connected externly to the line in on my SB Live) after installing kamix. So the SB Live is working and so are my speakers. The problem is that KDE does not seem to recognize my card. It does not play the startup sounds (even though I could see the volume graphical bar moving in kamix...).

Kmix has the following controls:
bass, treble, synth, pcm, speaker, pcm2, IGain, Digital
and in the corner it says "SigmaTel STAC9708/11"

So it is obviously not reading my card...it thinks I have this other card. BUT I dont even have that module or staticly-built in my kernel.

thanks for reading...post ideas

good news. I have some more sound now. But I have to turn like a hundred switches to get simple playback.

BUT I think I found the culprit...I am trying to use ALSA, but when I click on hardware information in kmixer, it says OSS...

could this be where my problem is?

It is an OSS emulation mode with the ALSA driver. You must go in the kde configuration center -> Sound and Multimedia -> Sound System -> Material. I have Automatic Detection and it work just fine.
