how do I read files that end on .gz?

use gunzip:

Code:

gunzip /usr/share/doc/<file name>.gz

then read the file as you would normally.

If you don't want to uncompress it, but just to see it, you can try (for example:)

zcat /usr/share/doc/wget-1.8.1/COPYING.gz | less
