Ok, so don't bother read this if you've heard it time and time again... but I have to express how delighted I am with the gentoo install. I went from a box with a cable connection into a sleek, well-optimized box that has me all fluttery from the process. I had an early hitch which required me to re-bootstrap but everything went fine, I compiled my own kernel configuration (still with 2.4 since I'm new at this) and it booted but no USB keyboard support =[ so I had to recompile the kernel with a bunch of settings I didn't entirely get but to make sure the stupid keyboard would work (while frantically searching for PS/2 converters). But it works now... I barely have functioning MozillaFirebird (it keeps telling me to do ALSA which I will this afternoon. I've still got to emerge all the stuff I want, configure apache, get my laptop to talk to the box, get the wacom working, and the stupid scroller... what was the weird thing I had to do with my mouse, X? And yet when the system boots smoothly and I log into the beautiful simplicity that is fluxbox I feel comfy at home and ready to move the furniture in.... I love gentoo, man. _________________ peribleptic anacolouthon. |
