I'm buying some (budget) hardware tomorrow.
Athlon XP 2500+ Barton
Abit AN7 (an NF2 board Ultra 400)
TwinMOS 2x256Mb
Cooler
Any tips/suggestions for kernel settings/drivers needed etc?
Thanks.

Add "noapic acpi=off" to the boot parameters in order to avoid freezes. The sound works fine with the Alsa snd-intel8x0 driver and network works very well with the forcedeth module (referred to as "Reverese engineered nforce Ethernet" in the kernel configuration).
If you get a board with a SATA controller chances are it's a Silicon Image 3112(a) one. Use the libata driver instead of the ATA/IDE one; the latter is pretty much abandoned, and the libata driver works great.
