Well, broadly speaking, the Hurd is a bunch of servers that run around a microkernel - which I think is Mach atm. This is meant to have certain advantages over a monolithic kernel like Linux, although the Hurd's been in development for many a year now and isn't showing any imminent signs of taking over our systems.
I'm sure someone else here knows more about it than me. You might be better off asking on the Debian forums though, there is a debian/hurd whereas I don't know of anyone who's bothered running Gentoo with it. |
