Download 2.6.8. sources, compile and run?

Code:

emerge development-source

will give you 2.6.8.1 sources i think

just do
Code:
emerge gentoo-dev-sources

cd to new directory of 2.6.8 in /usr/src/new kernel and do

Code:
make menuconfig
make && make modules_install

then copy bzImage to /boot and change grub accordingly

On a similar matter, would I be able to use my config file for the non-gentoo 2.6.6 kernel with the new 2.6.8 kernel when I upgrade?

i think you may not becasuse all distros come with patches. and they all have different config files. but you can try. doesnt hurt. if you want i can sent you my config file of nitr-sources, love-sources or ck-sources.

Oh well, I guess Ill just have to have the menuconfig for the old and the menuconfig for the new open and go between them.

Thanks for the offer but your configs wouldnt do me any good. I had to hack around with quite a few options to get everything working on my system.
