|
|
I put the ebuilds in the PORTDIR_OVERLAY
but that dit not yet work:
Code: |
emerge -up world
These are the packages that I would merge, in order.
Calculating world dependencies /
!!! all ebuilds that could satisfy "~media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.4191" have been masked.
!!! (dependency required by "media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.4191" [ebuild])
|
but I cannot find a reference to nvidia in the package.mask?
so I did set the ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" to get the system to take the new ebuilds into account.
but now they want to update quite a bunch of other packages too:
Code: |
emerge media-video/nvidia-glx -up
These are the packages that I would merge, in order.
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/baselayout-1.8.5.5 [1.8.5.3-r0]
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/perl-5.8.0-r3 [5.6.1-r7]
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/flex-2.5.23 [2.5.4a-r5]
[ebuild U ] dev-libs/expat-1.95.5-r1 [1.95.4-r0]
[ebuild U ] media-libs/fontconfig-2.1 [2.0-r4]
[ebuild U ] x11-base/xfree-4.2.1-r2 [4.2.1-r0]
[ebuild U ] media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.4191 [1.0.3123-r2]
[ebuild U ] media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.4191 [1.0.3123-r0]
|
is this realy necessary?
how would I get the drivers to build without updating the whole system?

I emerged the new drivers, didn't noticed any difference in 2d, everything is still fast. 3d might be slightly faster but I didn't do a before and after comparison so it's hard to say. |

so, got it running --- and went back immediately
as otheres reported: the 2D performance was horrible: moving a window on screen and having the screen redraw 10sec later is no fun
that's with a GF4 TI 4200 128MB on gentoo 1.4, XFree 4.2.1, gcc 3.2.1 _________________ thanks

OMFG I went from +/- 800 (I think) to 1700 FPS in glxgears
And no problems with transparent terminal...
Gonna try ut2003 now |

So for some works, for some 2D gets stuffed and for some it won't go...
I suspect the variance in performance (both up in 3D and down in 2D) is dependent on your HW... Would you mind including your actual nvidia GPU when reporting this kind of stuff?
Also... glxgears may vary due to fullscreen/non and color depth... Keeping these fixed, it gives a good idea of 3D performance.
But what about 2D? Is there a way to benchmark? _________________ Need to flame people LIVE on IRC? Join #gentoo-otw on freenode! |

Okay, I just tried UT2003 and my framerate is much stabler as before. It used to vary from 20 to 50 fps, depending on how much work there was to be done, now I just play constantly at a +/- 40-50 fps, no need to say gameplay is much better I have a Hercules Geforce II MX, never thought it would go along this long I'm still going to buy a Ti4200 though glxgears was in normal mode... |

I have an ABIT KG7 with a GF4 Ti 4400. Glxgears went from 3,800 to 4,500. 2D performance is pretty lousy though. Dragging around a window gives me a headache...
One other thing. Had to put "nvidia" in /etc/modules.autoload to get the nvidia module to load, even though I'm running devfs. Anyone know how to load the module automatically like previous Nvidia drivers were? _________________ Erich J. Wahl

They hang my X with a black screen on startup, no keyboard response at all, had to hit the reset button and go back to the previous version. Interestingly enough, the new Windows ones cause XP to bluescreen on bootup for me as well...
I have a Creative Labs GeForce3 Ti200, gentoo-sources 2.4.19-r9, athlon XP 2100+ with most of the system optimised for -march=athlon-xp. I'm suspecting there may be 'issues' with my card given that the Windows 40.x series don't work either, and these are the Linux equivalents of that. (the windows ones claim 25% driver performance gain by the way). _________________ Your Gentoo woll sle me sodenly!

As for the drivers themselves, I cannot distinguish between the old and the new in X, but my glxgears has gone from 1400 to 1700. Not too shabby. |

I found the fix to make these new drivers fast!!
Option "RenderAccel" "1"
Just add that line to ur XF86Config
like this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "geforce2"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NvAGP" "1"
Option "DigitalVibrance" "2"
Option "RenderAccel" "1"
But these new drivers are broken with gnome 2.1.2, some weird transparency issue |

Nope, doesn't solve my problem, instead leads to hard lockups every few minutes... (Also reported by others on the NVnews-Forum...)
btw: On a Geforce2MX |

the RenderAccel apparantly doesn't work for everybody. I read on the nvidia forums that somebody was still getting slow performance after turning that on, and they said that they had strange behavior where the 2D would start working fast again after they ran a 3d app. But i don't know if that will work in general or not. This all seems very screwy. Seems like the drivers need more testing. |

The RenderAccel is working well for me, nice and fast on my GF3 Ti200. The mouse is also much smoother, and after perusing the XF86 log file, it mentions something called "silken mouse." Silken it most certainly is in comparison to before. However, the digital vibrance doesn't seem to be working and my colors are all very dull, even with it set to 3. xv video playback in mplayer is nice and smooth, and the infinity sdl xmms plugin is working nice and fast. I'll be installing UT2k3 to test the opengl to see how well that is working here......

No Prob for me, 2D doesn't at all seem slower, glxgears even gives a bunch of more frames, about stability, well, we'll see, so far no probs.

Tried that renderaccel option and it made no difference. 2D is still dead slow on my Geforce4 Ti4200. I had a look in the Xfree log file and it says:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Enabling experimental RENDER acceleration
and later:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Using the NVIDIA 2D acceleration architecture
(==) NVIDIA(0): Backing store disabled
(==) NVIDIA(0): Silken mouse enabled
I don't consider this much in the way of acceleration - it feels the same speed as unaccelerated SVGA. |

I have to agree with the above post of my 2D stinks.
Athlon T-Bird 1.4
512 MB of Ram
Geforce Ti200 128MB of ram and my 2D was slowing when moving windows around. I didnt even bother trying 3D as I could not stand the 2D. I am using the older Version for now. _________________ Information is pure. Take a knife, for example. You can use it to cut up vegetables, butter your bread, etc. Or you can use it as a weapon. Eh?!? 2D had just suddenly come up to speed! It was after I ran a 3D program, as someone mentioned earlier. Hey, this feels good - I think I'll test it for a bit and see if there are any crashes.
To prove you can't have everything, glxgears is now back to under 6000 - seems you can only have one or't other.
Still seeing artifacts and striping in gnome windows...

Okay, this confirms it. I played a mplayer video, and on coming out everything was dog slow again. I ran glxgears and 2D speeded up again. Maybe it's time I had a whinge to Nvidia instead of clogging up this group!

Same card here, same problem
The machine isn't completly frozen, as shows an ssh-connection, which responded, very very slow though, and nevertheless the reset-button is the only choice.
The logs aren't that enlightening.
I thought maybe the agp-settings or something could be responsible, if it's the card...bad luck...
I guess I stick to the old drivers till I can afford a new nvidia-card (hopefully just before doom3 is released ) |

DigitalVibranse should be int {0,1,2} , 3 is not an option. |

Actually, reading nVidia's updated docs, I found out the DigitalVibrance is now on a 0-255 scale. Now I have it cranked all they way up and my colors are nice and bright again.... |

This is really apreciated! Digital Vibrance with tv-output was way too bleeding red for me on any setting before |

When the emerge finished, you were warned that because of the protection system, a file was left over on /etc. All you had to do was mv /etc/modules.d/._something /etc/modules.d/nvidia _________________ Lego my ego, and I'll lego your knowledge
