Kernel 2.6.8.1-mm1 and 2.6.8-rc4-mm1 both produce the following dmesg error on boot:

Quote:
Probing IDE interface ide1...
hdc: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
Probing IDE interface ide2...
ide2: Wait for ready failed before probe !
Probing IDE interface ide3...
ide3: Wait for ready failed before probe !
Probing IDE interface ide4...
ide4: Wait for ready failed before probe !
Probing IDE interface ide5...
ide5: Wait for ready failed before probe !

2.6.8-rc3-mm2 and previous mm-sources have not reported this.

I have carefully recompiled both problem versions and can't see an obvious cause. The problem is reported on Google with no solutions. The Linux-Kernel archive doesn't mention it.

Does anyone know what causes this and how to cure it, please?

I don't know for sure what causes this but don't worry, it just probes every ide interface to see if there's something there. YOu shouldn't be worried except if something is missing: a hDD , a cd cdrw... etc.
And if there's nothing there of course it errors out (duh) what do you want it to find aliens? :D

Many thanks, izomorfix. Before I try the patch I'll see if it's in the new 2.6.8.1-r2. Obviously I need to add kernel.org to my search pattern. Regards.

i solve it removing from /usr/src/linux/driver/ide_probe.c any call of the wait_hwif_ready function (1 call).
