Could someone tell me, in their opinion, which is the better kernel to compile, 2.4 or 2.6?

Any comments welcomed

Cheers

2.4 is easiest to get working with some stuff. You will find a lot more help on it, but 2.6 is probably better. Think about it, the kernel developers would not be releaseing a new version if it was not better than the previous. Despite how old you machine is as long as you got the room for the kernel image it really shouldn't matter, just turn off what you don't need.
