FYI, I am running lm_sensors also... This on a K7S5A mobo. So I'm using the IT87 driver. _________________ Jeff Stuart

Quote: | edit: Did some looking around.. Looks like my motherboard supports AGP 4X. So does the video card... Hmm.. Time to do some snooping around. I'm running at 1600x1200 if that matters.. Dropping the resolution back down to 1280x1024 gets me in the high 800 range.. | Heh, you're not maximizing glxgears are you? That would explain those scores...
And I wouldn't think your AGP rate has anything to do with your glxgears score. |

I tried applying the patch so I could compile the nvidia drivers against the 2.5.52 kernel and all I get is an error message:

Anyone know how to fix that? |

I have a similar setup as Spade's. GeForce3 Ti200, using nvagp and gentoo-sources 2.4.19-r10 with SMP (dual pentium3)
Spades wrote: | Strange. My experience has been pretty much the opposite of all this. I had no problems with the new drivers. 2D is still running fine. I haven't done benchmarks, but UT2003 *felt* smoother at least.
I have a GeForce4 Ti4400. I'm using agpgart, and gentoo-sources 2.4.19-r10. Oh, and SMP. Anybody with a similar setup having problems? |
and the only problem I got when switching to the new drivers.. were that wine/winex stopped working for some reason.
Anyone got this problem and found a solution? |

hmm, I also use lm_sensors, maybe it has something to do with the 2d slowdown, but i can imagine that everyone who experiences this slowdown uses lm sensors |

Im currently using lm_sensors to with no problems so far ...havent had much time for huge usage to verify this but seems fine so far
running ABIT BE6 and Leadtek GF4TI4200 fps in glx gears has increased and things seem smoother in X in general .
Cheers

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the slowdown with lm_sensors was a completely separete issue in my case as it also happend for me with the older nvidia drivers. |

Has anyone noticed this, in /usr/portage/media-video/nvidia-kernel/Changelog?
14 Dec 2002; Martin Schlemmer <azarah@gentoo.org> nvidia-kernel-1.0.4191.ebuild:
As it seems this version need MTRR support for most chipsets, die if its not
detected with a suited message ... This should close bug #12015.
I was able to use 4191 without MTRR in the kernel before this, but I moved back to the old version because of the 2D slowdown. I noticed this when I rsync'd today, so I compiled a kernel with MTRR and switched back to 4191. The slowdown seems to be gone for me, but YMMV. _________________ Anyone who attributes a quote to themself is a pompous fool.

I have MTRR in my kernel, and I have fast 2D with the new drivers.
A new problem that I've never had before though, is that winex won't work with any games at all now.
Anyone know a solution for that? |

ok i got it working on my comp, no noticable slowdown in 2d yet, haven't had time to fully check yet, but i think i remember a 2d benchmarking program, xperf was it? i think people ought to try both sets and compare those or post them here. but i've got another problem with the new drivers it takes 5 minutes to start up. i'm going to see what i can do about this one. |

I have an ABIT KG7 and a GF4 Ti 4400. I'm using the nvidia driver (no agpgart module and not compiled in). MTRR is enabled in my kernel (vanilla 2.4.20 with Win4Lin, mki-adapter, preempt and preempt addon patches applied). dmesg | grep mtrr produces
mtrr: v1.40 (20010327) Richard Gooch (rgooch@atnf.csiro.au)
mtrr: detected mtrr type: Intel
The nvidia.o module only loads if I place "nvidia" in /etc/modules.autoload. Tried the agpgart module but it fails to load and X won't start if the nvidia module isn't loaded.
My /etc/modules.d/nvidia:
alias char-major-195 nvidia
alias /dev/nvidiactl char-major-195
options nvidia NVreg_EnableAGPSBA=1 NVreg_EnableAGPFW=1
No error or warning messages in /var/log/XFree86.0.log. However, 2D slowdown is quite noticeable if I drag around a maximized application by its titlebar. If the application window is about a quarter of the total screen size (1280x1024), then no slowdown is noticeable. It's only apparent if the window is maximized and I drag it around the desktop.
Refresh of maximized applications is also slow as I switch from one virtual desktop to another.
None of this occurs with the 3123 drivers. _________________ Erich J. Wahl

Interestingly, this driver package supports agp 3.0 on my kt400 board. I couldn't get it to work with any of the kernel agpgart mod's.
Currently running it with mjc sources. |

From LinuxGaming :
Quote: | Hearing that some poeple are having problems with the latest NVIDIA drivers and window managers such as KDE and Gnome, Augustus from www.linuxhardware.org contacted NVIDIA about this problem. Here is what he found out:
"We are aware of the problem with 2D performance in the 1.0- 4191 driver; our next release will have a fix for this. I don't think enabling 'Option "RenderAccel"' will help. What should help is going back to an older version of Gnome or using KDE or, if that is not acceptable, sticking with the 1.0-3123 drivers for now. There is a discussion about this on the linux forum http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=14" |
So it's just waiting for us that have this problem, it'd be nice if the Nvidia people had given a ETA or something but Nooo... anyways, "nv" driver have served me well ever since I installed 2.5 and was to lazy to patch it (until the patch was integrated into portage ebuild, just to be removed a couple of updates later) so I'm in no rush, just curious if any 2D stuff have been improved in these drivers.
And that's not really a real qoute btw, the linux forum URL was broken in the Linux Gaming post... |
