Hi,
I have an Asus Mainboard => P4P800.
It seems like gentoo has some problems with my networkcard which is on the motherboard...
I have installed gentoo with my livecd and with the command "modprobe sk98lin" I was able to run the network.
But now I restarted gentoo at the end of the installation without the livecd and gentoo couldn`t initialize the network
I think I did everything like they said in the documentation.
I have read this thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=146018&highlight=p4p800+network but it didn`t work. Perhaps because I use the vanilla-sources (Kernel 2.4.27)??
Does anybody know how to get the network working?
I would install the other Kernel (2.6) if my network would work
And yes, sorry I`m a n00b |

for the record; the 2.6 kernels have made good advances in the module compatability, support,etc area. i had no problem getting my realtek hardware modules to load and some of my nvidia modules in another machine went well. i would definitely refer you to the 2.6 kernel. _________________ I've been away for a long time, bear with me. |

I am in the process of tring to resolve the same issue and have two exact machines (except for the bios version) both using the P4P800 SE motherboard.
The bios version on one board is 1005.003 and the nic works fine with the 2.6 and 2.4 kernel (with or without SMP).
The other machine's bios version is 1006.001 and the onboard nic works fine with a 2.6 kernel. The nic WILL NOT WORK with the 2.4 kernel without SMP support compiled in.
BTW, just for grins, I installed a pci nic and it didn't work either on the 1006.001 machine with the 2.4(w/o SMP) kernel. I am going to flash the bios on this machine to 1007 and see if this fixes the problem.

Bios version 1007.003 (latest available from asus as of this post) fixes the nic issue. If you have the P4P800 SE motherboard with bios version 1006.001 and want to use kernel 2.4 without SMP, update your bios. |
