I am leaning towards ditching my powerbook g4 and getting an ultraportable laptop. Cost is not as big of a factor as is weight (under 4lbs) dims (under 1") and graphics. Although I'd love to have a widescreen 12" laptop I haven't found anything really good yet. That leaves me between the thinkpad x40 and asus s5n. Anyone have a recommendation between the two? A cursory search showed that the x40 might have better linux support...
Anyone care to share some experiences or another recommendation? |

No.. love the PowerBook (I actually worked at Apple for many years) but the weight is really getting to me. 5.7# every day back and forth to work (I don't use a car.) The 12" is better, but still not great for that.
Also, I mess with linux a bit but never really dive into it as much as I'd like to since the box is at the office. Having a laptop with me that's running linux will allow me to use it much more frequently and thus hopefully learn it better. |

Ok.
A little off topic, but I'm waiting for the new Powerbook (12").
Checked out the x40 the other day and its very light! nice laptop with excellent IBM support. A little slow though .. & the cd/dvd is external.
Asus looks nice too.
If its definately one of those, then I'd probably go for the x40.
Else I'll wait for some slim amd64 laptops or dual core PB's.
Good luck! _________________ Tyan Tiger K8W, 2xOpteron 240,Powerbook5,6 15" 1.5g, Macbook Black 2g, Mac Mini 1g, Ipod P60g.

Thinkpads are *very* nice machines. They are slick as hell and the ones I've had have been very durable, but you'll pay a premium for that goodness. If money were no object I'd stick to them 100%. |
