Username question

I am trying to get a SUN E250 running Gentoo 2004.2 setup for users on our corporate network to access. I have the machine up and running but the problem I am having is with the Username conventions used by our corporate IT department. Currently all user accounts are firstname.lastname . The idea is to use the same usernames on Gentoo but when I try to add them manually I get an error because of the period.

The plan, down the road, is also to integrate this server into the Corporate Active Directory for authentication and file sharing.

Is there a way to add these user account using usernames with periods in them?

Hope this isn't something obvious. But probably is

If you intend on later adding the server into an active directory, I would start now. Get winbind up and running and then you don't need to set the users up.

Thanks alot PJP. Will give that a shot first thing in the morning.

Nobspangle. That is probably the best bet. I was hoping to get my users running on CVS right away, I am working on the AD how-to found here in the forums. I think I will add our two primary Developers to the machine using the above script and then just focus on winbind.
