I have Gnome set up to start when i boot my machine, but after i changed my kernel to 2.6 it hasn't worked very well. I got an error saying that the nvidia drivers wasn't loaded when starting gdm (because i had gnome working with nvidia support in 2.4) so i installed the nvidia drivers again, and they work now (according to "lsmod" anyway), but whenever i start Gnome now, i don't get an error, the screen just goes black and i loose control of keyboard and mouse, so i can't escape without rebooting.

I might be able to solve this, but my current problem is that i can't get into the console because it immediately enters gnome on boot, and then locks up. i tried booting from the livecd, but in there i can't seem to find my X11 folder, or any of the things i have installed, and if i change something it isn't saved. (i tried to change "xdm" to "kdm" in rc.conf, hoping for an error on boot instead of black screen, but no such luck)

If somebody know how i can avoid the bootup in gnome, or have some useful info, it will be greatly appreciated.

If you boot with the live cd and chroot into the gentoo system, in the same way as it says in the installation manual then remove gdm (or which ever display manager you use) from the init...
I think should do it...
Code:
 rc-update del gdm default

(if you aren't using gdm subsitute that with your displaymanger...)

then you should be able to reboot normally and login through console...

Hold down the shift key during boot to get LILO prompt. Then enter your kernel name (tab for list if you don't know it) followed by 1 to boot to single user mode. E.g. "Linux 1"

The problem is not in GDM or KDM, but in your kernel/X configuration. Read the X log file before exiting single user mode, and try to solve the issue.
