No such device or address.

that's my problem in a nutshell.
/dev/psaux does exist, its linked to /dev/misc/psaux, which
I also tried specifying in XF86Config.
a `cat /proc/misc' shows an entry for psaux
the mouse is a simple 2 button job, "Keytronic" brand.
any ideas? |

Was it in during bootup? If you don't have a ps/2 mouse plugged in before bootup, it won't work. |

hmm.. the messages above came out of the
/var/log/XF86... log after doing a startx.
I suppose if its coming down to something obvious like having the mouse plugged in its starting to look like a hardware problem.
I just rebooted and checked via dmesg,
PS/2 is detected.
I've never had a ps/2 port go bad before. The mother board is only about 1 year old, an
Abit KG7-Lite. What's curious is that I've tried
2 other systems in this box, by swapping the
hard drives: redhat 7.2 and debian. They hang with mouse&keyboard dead, but get as far as displaying the initial graphical desktop (gnome + windowmaker). But I thought it was a problem with the ATI Rage Pro 128 graphics card not being recognized.
I've tried 3 different mice.
Hmm... a few more error messages from the
XFree86 log regarding the graphics card driver:
(II) R128(0): Acceleration enabled
(II) R128(0): Using hardware cursor (scanline 4104)
(II) R128(0): Largest offscreen area available: 1280 x 5525
(II) R128(0): Direct rendering disabled

Turned out to be hardware. I tried a serial
mouse and that worked (more or less). I
probably hosed my PS2 connector when I had to remove the motherboard to install a Zalman fan, the one that mounts with 4 screws and has a dial for controlling fan speed. |
