I got into an argument yesterday about this, believe it or not, with an auditor for Microsoft that I go to class with. I wanted to set the record straight...

Plus: is it zhentoo, jentoo, or hard-g gentoo?

When I first heard about Linux, many years ago I always assumed that it was pronounced Ly - nux. But this was only from reading about it, I had never actually heard anyone say the word. Most of the other Linux people I have met use Lin - ux, so I tend to use both, interchangeably.

This topic comes up quite often... good that we have Linus to tell use how it is pronounced clicky.

Most people I've come across that don't have a clue as to what Linux is pronounce it as Lynux or even Lynix. After I stop laughing, I tell them how to pronounce it.

When I went to my first class this sememster, one of the guys I was talking to in the class pronounced gentoo with a g sound as is ghost

(ghentoo.....haha ha) :lol:

And, as he works for Microsoft, I doubt I'll be able to convert him. I think installing linux is a hanging offense over there (yes, Washington still hangs people). We had a chuckle or two when his kernel crashed 8 times before my eyes...I want his little toshiba tablet, though...drool.
