Well spoken...
I just try to save my money for a while, and if I really have to, I'll buy an NVidia card as well. More then a year has past, and nothing seams to improve..
In fact, I mention my problems with ATI to everyone trying Linux. Perhaps the recent big switch to Linux in Germany starts waking ATI up.. (afaik they choose NVIdia because of the drivers) ATI is seriously starting to loose customers if more cities will make the switch. _________________ The best way to accelerate a windows server is by 9.81M/S²

I tried them as I tried the 5 previous ati drivers releases. Those ones don't work with xorg 6.8.0 or 6.8.1. X restarts when you start an opengl program. |

In fact, those drivers run like 3.12 with xorg 6.8.0. They suck.
If you want to try shadows, use xorg radeon drivers. It's not very smooth but you can take a screenshot to impress your friends.
I didn't manage to make transparency working well.
Ps : Apologies for my poor english |

I just upgraded to the new drivers and it seems to be working with my mobile radeon 9000 (m9). I'm using xorg-x11-6.7.0-r2 though.
question: is there a big different between 6.8 and 6.7? |

I wish ATI would stop pratting around with these 'bug fixes' that don't seem to do anything really other than add support for 1 or 2 new cards, and get us a driver that works with x.org 6.8
as for differences, fixes a load of issues and is a major graphical improvement (fluff wise) with shadows (composite) and transparency (damage) _________________ Tim

not really.. perhaps some issues are fixed you had problems with, but the composite extension isn't really useful to far. as said above, you can take screenshots to impress your friends.. it looks really cute, but it "isn't ready" yet.
afaik, this is exactly what the changelog also stated. this release is however very useful for kde/gnome developers, they can adjust their apps already for the composite extension. _________________ The best way to accelerate a windows server is by 9.81M/S²

Funny thing is 3.12 runs well with xorg 6.7. I tried ati 3.14 and my frames ratesd dropped from 7-8 thousand to 7 hundred. It's almost like they are intentionally sabotaging the drivers. Only problem is my laptop can't switch video cards or I would have done it by now. I am not going back to windows over a video driver I'll just by the competitors hardware that works well. I wish someone would do a non bias census and find out what the truth is about the numbers of users using linux. Then a number of them that are gamers. I bet you they would be surprised. |

I've gotten the ati-drivers 3.14.1 to work with xorg 6.7, but anything that pushes the graphics at all (Ogre demos) fails. With the older drivers it doesn't.
sigh, I remember the good old days when we had source code for our video cards..... course those cards were mainly text... |

How's nvidia running with xorg? I cannot imagine, that ati is so incompetent or unwilling to support it. My xorg even crashes with the xorg-radeon drivers, having dri loaded. I'd have expected it to not run at all. But instead xorg crashes, too. I think I will revert back to xorg 6.7, as the transparency-stuff doesn't work right anyway. xorg 6.8 is somewhat bad and fortunately there's a scapegoat called "ATI". |

edit (might need to create) /etc/portage/package.keywords and add a line like
media-video/ati-drivers ~x86 _________________ Tim

heh, if that is true... someone at ATi will regret saying that sooner or later. (esp as most users are now on xorg) This whole ATi hassle is more than its worth, makes me wish i'd got an nVidia card. I don't have a problem with ATi in Windows, Linux however... well, where do i start. I chose ATi at the time cos of Windows, that i hardly use anymore. Ah well, looks like i'm stuck with ATi for a few yrs now. Lets only hope that the person that replied there was wrong and ATI are actually going to do an xorg driver, and a good one at that. _________________ Tim
