Hey all,
I am a new Gentoo user, moving my home PC / print server over to it from RH... Anywho Everything is going great, its building xfree and kde since about 2am last night ( i am at work now, but at 8 am it was still chugging along... i think it was on 50 of 68 downloads).. Its a P3 833 w/512 mem...
I wonder if it will be finished by the time i get home ( 6pm) so i can start playing around... Anyone have a round about figure for a p3 833 install time w/ KDE... Tonight before i hit the sack i am going to setup Evolution mail client.. i herd that one takes a long time as well...
BTW I am amazed at the power of the portage system, its just fun to watch.. good thing i have another PC to play some Wolfenstein while it was installing last night ... Looks like i might be playing tonight too seeing that it takes so long for the other main stuff to get going... but i am sure the performance difference will be worth the wait... I tried explaing this to my buddy who uses RH 8, he thought i was just retarted when i told him how long it takes for the install/setup to complete .. to each his own thought, right?
Anyways, thanks for making a great product guys.. and for any future help i might need.
P.S. Any other suggestions for some essentials after kde, evolution, xchat, and gaim?

suggestions: xmms(winamp clone) and mplayer(excellent video player) are a must. If you're just going to use evolution for email, you may find that KMail does all you need(part of the default kde pkg). You may also want to look into phoenix(emerge phoenix-bin) for your browser. It's an optimized version of mozilla. Be warned it depends on mozilla so will take forever to build. If you plan to do heavey office work you'll need openoffice. It's available as either a from source build(emerge openoffice-bin) or from source(emerge openoffice). I've ha better luck with getting the from source build to work properly, but it takes forever to build. |

fileserver: samba. It ccreates shares visible to windows clients as well as other linux clients with samba installed. It also handles printing from windows clients hoever i've had a hell of a time getting it to work. I beleve cups can be used for remote printing from a linux client.
If you need help setting up cups ther is a lot of good documentation out there. |

You think it was hard to explain to your friend running Redhat, try explaining it to a windows user. _________________ What Larry was saying is that if you make it too easy for programmers, then poor programmers will be able to do things best left to good programmers, and will inevitably do them poorly. Everyone will suffer in the long term as a result." - Tom Chance |

KDE is up and running well.. and now its doing evolution gaim and xchat...
KDE seems to be running Nice, smooth, and quick! seems as fast as RH 8 that i had on my 1900xp system...
Only hicup i had was when i spelled kernel like this kernal in the grub config took me 20 min to figure that out hehe, i thought i borked the kernel...
Trying to think of what else to install tonight............ |
