Replacing the two .so files in /opt/doom3 with symlinks to the gentoo compiled ones (use slocate to find them) brought me from 40.2 to 45.7 fps in 1280x1024 high quality/no AA. Not bad for free.
If you experience washed out textures, check if your video memory has been detected properly. On Windows I had to set it manually through the commandline because it kept reverting to 64MB (and the lowres textures). I played almost through the entire game before I saw that the textures looked a lot better on a friends PC (with almost exactly the same setup).
I think the cvar is com_vid... just hit tab. You could +seta that on the commandline or define it in autoexec.cfg. |

That (com_videoRam) didn't work. Problem is that it was detected properly, but it still has washed out looking textures. |

Wow. Not exactly a vote of confidence, but I guess I've done enough troubleshooting (and made enough dumb mistakes myself) that I won't take offense.
But no, thanks anyway, there doesn't appear to be a Doom 3 demo ebuild.
Complete list of matches for:
doom3
doom
(Note: it's not in there as I post this, but for all I know it'll be in there tomorrow. So if it actually IS in one of the above listings and I look like a complete jackass, well, I'm actually not.) _________________ Thad

Well it's running on my Ati Radeon 9600XT, but barely. I'm getting 23.1fps with the timedemo demo1, and I was just running through the start of the game when it suddenly kinda blew up, and was horribly artifacted (I was seeing through the walls into the bg image thing of the mountains of mars, there were a bunch of overlapping HUGE triangular polygons, textures got messed etc. Hopefully performance will improve once I swap out to an FX5600.
Still, nice to see it running on my linux. |

I am really impressed!
Ultra quality is playable on my 3 year old pc (+new geforce 5900xt).
Users of newer nvidiacards should try the arb2 renderpath too because doom seems to use nv20 by default. |

Using portage ebuild.
Nvidia FX5900XT
Latest Drivers (6111 in both Linux and Windows)
1024x768 at Medium Quality
No Extra Tweaks:
timedemo demo1 usecache
Linux ~28fps
Windows ~28fps
Neither is fantastic performance but atleast it is consistent

As I have said many times ... support those companies that support linux. Always nvidia over ati. _________________ "You can lead a horticulture but you can't make her think" ~ Dorothy Parker

P4 3.0Ghz (with HT, 800mhz fbs), 1.5gb RAM (@333mhz), Radeon 9800:
medium quality @800*600: 15-20fps (in medium small areas)
It runs nice, but could be much better. Whenever I bump into a character, the graphics crash.

Well I have said it and I will say it again about Video Cards
Nvidia. The Way it is MEANT to be played! A superior Video Card for a Superior Operating System.
I had an Old ATI , a Matrox, and did not see the light of Nvidia till Unreal Tournament 2003 I friend of Mine Gave me a GeForce 2 mx200 and that is what I used in my old PC (Which is now a Server) all my other boxes run Nvidia, and My Wife Agrees. For Linux. Nvidia is Second to none. Even in windows Nvidia is Second to none
I am an Nvidiot and proud of it!
Doom 3 Plays Awesome. all my games play awesome. and the setup is simple _________________ Yeah... I got nothin for this field! |

First off what a great game the intro and first level is pretty tense... Im scared please help
AMD 2400xp
nvidia 6800 6111 drivers
1 gig ddr 2700 ram
HighQuality 1024x768 (i may be in 1280x1024 cant member im at work) I get about 40-65 .. most of the time, but if I go into a room with lots of machines moving around and lights I will drop to about 20-30..
Runs alot better than Americas Army.
Of course I still lock up everytime a game starts as in all my games with these 6111 drivers.. I have to ctrl alt f1 than ctrl alt f7 back in... errrrr making me mad.. nvcliplock timed out or something... _________________ write quit bang |

I have installed the game three times, once with portage and twice with the id installer. Every time, I can't get acceptable frame rates even at the lowest settings. I'm running on a p4 2.8, 512 ram, geforce fx5600. At the lowest settings my max framerate is about 15 fps. I've tried several tweaks as well as killing kde and running the game from xterm, however this didn't help. Anyone having similar problems, or found a solution? |

I just copied them into .doom3/base/savegames and it worked. I have hear people have trouble with quicksaved games, so i only used my full saves. |

btw, i spent 100+ hours reading various benchmarks over net imeddiatly as DOOM III got to shelves. Basic conclusion:
anything LESS than GF 6800/6600 or Radeon 9800XT/X800 is absolutly SHIT for DOOM 3, cuz u get totally different game experience playing on lower HW than this.
As I have small PC game club, I tested this game on 20 different PC configuration, range from 1700 Athlon - AMD 64 bit 3000+, VGA ATI 9000 - Nvidia 6800.
Of course, with all that unpack*base dir tweaks and some console tweaks u get +- 5-10 FPS. But biggest FPS increase is from TURNING O F F SHADOWS and running Doom in 640 resolution /and then it looks like 6 years old graphic engine, worst than Q Arena.../
I like all that ' I have Duron and GF MX 440 and I have 30 FPS' hype.... yes, u get it, but its not playable, in demo u get it, in real game u get much worse FPS cuz AI is involved. When u open new doors - FPS drop from that holy 30 FPS to 10 ! And also fun is, that when u have older cards like GF Titanium 4200 /most used VGA 1 year ago/, u get much better FPS than with GF 5600/ Radeon 9600 non pro or XT, because DOOM 3 uses advanced graph. functions of that GF 5600 and its slow like hell and when u use old Ti 4200, DOOM doesnt detect that featuses and so doesnt use them and runs FASTER - total fun.
I personaly think that 800x600 HIGH details is BASIC resolution DOOM 3 should be played. Anything less is blurry, old-looking. BTW, isnt it a fun thing that MOST of PC users are forced to play this game in max 800x600 LOW resolution in year 2004 ? heheh, for me its fun running new game in archaic 640 resolution on VGA cards which costed me 150 USD just 1 year ago.
These tests are based on WIN experience, I wonder if it changes in Linux client. Hehehe, same results for my "old" system in Win and Lin,:
notebook> AMD64 3000+, 512MB, GF5600: 640x480, LOW, all feat. OFF - 17 FPS
desktop> P4 2800, 533 FSB, 1000MB, GF 6800: 1024x768, HIGH, all ON- 58 FPS
post your results if u want to share some numbers with Linux Doom 3 client |

Here are my results:
amd64 3200 1GB Ram FX 5900 (64bit system)
1024x786 default
timedemo demo1 usecache 28,7 fps
shadows off 35 fps.
Its somewhat disappointing. In windows i have with shadows 47 fps.
cheers

@CDman: you can't compare a notebook card to a "real" agp card.
I do get these washed out textures though... I didn't get them in cedega.
I play at high detail@1024x768. For example the marine's hand looks awful! It really looked better in wine. And I checked com_videoRam is 128. _________________ Random Stuff |
