I'm trying to help a Gentoo newbie get on the internet with his Netgear MA111 wireless USB adapter.
I walked him through the Gentoo install, and we compiled the 2.6.7-gentoo-r11 kernel using genkernel.
I had him burn the files needed for linux-wlan-ng to a CD, and he copied them to /usr/portage/distfiles and then emerged the ~x86 version of linux-wlan-ng.
We edited /etc/conf.d/wlan and set the SSID to netgear, and then edited /etc/conf.d/wlancfg-netgear and changed the channel to the correct setting. He also edited /etc/conf.d/net and added the lines for wlan0 to set the IP address and gateway.
When he types /etc/init.d/wlan start, it says "* Starting WLAN devices
FATAL: Module wlan0 not found"
I had him load the ohci_hcd module since it wasn't loaded automatically, but we still get that error. Also, the light on his MA111 turns on when he plugs it in to the computer, but turns off immediately after. I don't know if that means anything.
Any idea how to get this working?

Now we got it to show up as wlan0, but it's in some sort of roaming/scanning mode, and I can't figure out how to specify the channel for it to use so it can connect.
Any ideas?

If you were familiar with the linux-wlan-ng drivers you would know that iwconfig can't be used to configure them.
