Hello

I'm having trouble with my gentoo install. I can boot from CD just fine.. set up my partitions.. get files moved, etc. Once everything is installed, I reboot, and continually get stuck at "Verifying DMI Pool Data ......." It will never boot off of the drive.. I can only boot off of the CD.

Here are my specs.. any help is greatly greatly appreciated.

Board: Abit AI7 (Pentium4 (3.06)) ICH5R controller
Drives: 2 SATA Seagate Baracuda (7200rpm) 200gigs
Kernel: gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8-r10

I was originally trying to get RAID1 configured, and thought they may be the culprit, so I cfdisked the drives, and redid everything w/o RAID to eliminate that possiblity. I noticed that drives felt like they were hanging occasionally when I was working with RAID.

Code:
/dev/sda1     /boot
/dev/sda2     /swap
/dev/sda3     /
/dev/sdb1     /files

Install went off without a hitch. I used grub as the boot loader..
Code:
root(hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/bzImage-2.6.8-gentoo-r10 root=/dev/sda3

On one of the install attempts I saw errors mentioning bad sector on hda... which doesn't make a whole lot of sense since I'm using sda or sdb
Code:
hda: media error (bad sector)

BIOS settings
Code:
Advanced BIOS Features->
First Boot Device: Hard Disk
Second Boot Device: CDROM

I have to change the First Boot Device to CDROM if I want to boot from LiveCD... else it would just hang on the DMI pool.

There is nothing out of the ordinary in dmesg.

Filesystems:
Code:
/boot = ext3
/swap = swap
/     = reiserfs

I also made sure (triple checked) that I mounted /mnt/gentoo/boot and not /boot when configuring grub/kernel, etc

I'm hoping that this is not a 'drive' issue and something I'm missing in the BIOS or SATA configurations. I can always boot using livecd and inspect my files on the drives.. so it is definetly writing to disc.

Thanks in advance for any help
hanji

If I remember correctly, this is not something Linux writes. In sted it's the bios, so make absolutely sure, that you have that configured correctly.
