|
|
I can no longer login as a normal user. I was su'd to root doing some maintenance work and must have messed something up, but I don't know what. When I try to login as a user now, I get a message "no home directory /home/username". The /home/username directory definitely exists though. I did notice that that the owner:group of the /home directory had been changed to username:users, so I set it back to root:root, but I still can't login as a user. Logging in as root works fine. I tried adding a new user, which worked fine, but when I tried logging in as the new user, I got the same message.
The home directory file permissions are
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 120 Oct 30 12:32 home
and the user directory permissions are
drwxr-xr-x 80 username users 4216 Oct 30 11:43 username
Any ideas on what I may have done? Thanks.

It should be "username users". The only other options I can think of are trying "chown -R username:users /home/username", verifying the permissions on /tmp: "drwxrwxrwt", and verifying you aren't running out of disk space "df -h". _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Hi,
What "It" are you referring to? The /home directory? Thanks.
The /tmp directory seems correct
drwxrwxrwt 30 root root 2336 Oct 30 12:47 tmp

Ok, thanks. I'm still locked out of my user accounts. I'm about at my wits end now.

What should the directory permissions be on the "/" directory. Mine currently are
drwxr-x--- 19 root root 432 Oct 30 13:42 .
Is this correct? I'm concerned about the world permissions be ---.
Thanks,

The / directory permissions were the problem. I did "chmod 755 /" and everything is working fine now.
