touchpad does not work

when i use the liveCD every thing works when i boot using my NEW gentoo system, no touchpad (and who knows what else)

I ran lsmod under the liveCD and got:
st
serial
ds
i82365
pcmcia_core
sbp2
usb-storage
hid
usb-ohci
usbcore

but under gentoo proper nothing is listed so i figure it is just a matter of loasing the right module but how do i get them onto my laptop? modprobe returns with unknown module and emerge says no ebuild so is there a package or something? Please help.

Did you comple the modules during the kernel config stage? Set it upo manually? or use genkernel?

What type of laptop is it?

We really need a bit more info to be able to help.

what does modprobe -l show?

just to clarify, you are running X or something right? you don't get mouse at the normal console unless you use gpm or something like that.
