|
|
Hi,
A quick look at some threads shows that I am clearly not the only one to get a blank screen when starting X.
After ´startx´ I have to switch the monitor off / on to get the display back to life (Ctl-Alt-BK doesn´t work, nor Alt-n to switch into another console - or better : it works but you can´t see it ).
The same problem is also present when booting from a Knoppix 3.3 or a Knoppix 3.6 CD.
With Mandrake 10.0 CE however, everything is normal. I checked the configuration file in Mandrake, copied some parts into xorg.conf, but to no avail.
Does anyone have a pointer or some information about the reasons why the screen goes blank ? I´m sure this would be of much help to newbies as this seems to be a recurrent problem. ? _________________ Life is deadly... |

My system : motherboard Asus A7V8X-MX, 512MB RAM, nVidia GeForce FX 5200.
When Mandrake switches to X, the monitor clicks and after about 1 second the screen comes to life again. With ´startx´ under Gentoo, no click is heard.
Can this information be of use ? _________________ Life is deadly... |

What version of the nvidia drivers are you using? Have you tried other versions? |

Well I fixed my problem. Well I don't know if I can really consider it a "fix"... but all I did was clean out xfree, and upgraded to xorg. It also installed the 6111 nvidia drivers. All is fine now... X starts, looks great... <shrug> |

Umm ok... I guess I posted too soon. This is really weird. When I have only an /etc/X11/xorg.conf (created with Xorg -configure), X won't start, however if I use my old XF86Config (by renaming xorg.conf) it starts fine. I've compared the files and tried to make them identical... which I think they are now except for some ordering. It's strange, they are, in theory the same file but with xorg.conf it won't start (I get black screen lockup), and with XF86Config it runs fine! What the hell? I attached both files.
This first one is xorg.conf

i tought that i had the same problem (x hanging) but isn't when i execute X really everthing hangs (music, etc) and working with an old xfree86config doesn't work either.
would this just be a 2.6.8.1 kernel bug or a problem that i first emerged xfree and directly after that i emerged xorg-x11 (+-250 files changed so maybe an wrong config file is causing al this)
the sad thing is that i don't have time for another install and upgrading a kernel is also out of the question because this one finally supports my acx100 chipset in a decent way.
hopefully a update of xorg will fix it al!!! |

Junco : I don´t think it is the same problem although maybe related. No click here means that even Alt-Fn doesn´t work. And I´m using the generic ´nv´ driver (see the xorg.conf above); I´ll wait to change to ´nvidia´ till this problem is solved.
Cleaning out XFree is no option here, as this is a new install (stage 1) and only Xorg was compiled.
The remark on the two conf-files is interesting. I´ve tried both (after changing some necessary params); they work both the same way, but...
I have reduced the xorg.conf to :
Code: |

- using the Standard VGA driver I get a screen with something like a 320x240 resolution (presumably due to the VGA resolution),
- simply changing Device ¨VGA¨ to ¨Card0¨ gives the blank screen; after switching the monitor off / on I get a screen with the normal resolution.
Can this be an indication that the problem lies with the ¨nv¨ driver ??? _________________ Life is deadly... |

Yes, agpart is compiled in the kernel
(in make menuconfig : <*> /dev/agpart (AGP Support)).
BTW, when the ugly low resolution screen is shown with VGA, there is no monitor click, which may indicate that the resolution in X is the same as the resolution of the terminal.
So, does the problem indicate that the monitor is unable to switch resolution ?
(It cannot be a hardware problem as Mandrake does manage to do it).
Or does Mandrake use another release of the ´nv´ driver ??? I´m using Xorg 6.7.0 with kernel 2.6.7 as I have the portage snapshot and all files on DVD. My intention is to build a working Gentoo from the DVD and thereafter sync portage and upgrade. _________________ Life is deadly... |

I had this problem the other day and turned out the mouse was pointing to the wrong device file. It was point to /dev/mouse what mine was actually /dev/input/mice. You may also want to manually change it to /dev/psaux as well. Basically I kept looking around in the /dev till I found the mouse.
I found this out looking in /var/log for xorg log file. It said the device pointer was not found.
Hope that helps.

I'd try using the nvidia driver if I were you. You might have more luck than with nv. My X is running now.. but is far from stable. GL stuff makes it lock sometimes. Sometimes it will run a 3d app fine, sometimes the screen goes black and I have to reboot. I don't know if this is due to buggy nvidia drivers or what... I"m also running xorg with the drop shadow and transparency extenstions... perhaps that isn't helping either, but it sure looks nice Now that I've got a working xorg.conf (posted above, but I still have no idea why other other one I posted doesn't work) I think I'll try emergeing the 5336 drivers again. Perhaps using some older, more stable drivers would help. |

Dalek,
I´ve tried both /dev/mouse and /dev/psaux, and there is no difference. _________________ Life is deadly... |

You may want to look around in /devand see if you can find something else that may be pointing to your mouse. You may also want to use nano or cat to check the error logs in /var/log. That was how I found the problem with mine. It siad it could not find the pointer device. It could be something else. May sure you configure your video card with the correct setttings as well.
I still don't know why it did at least come back to a console. I had to ssh in and do a reboot.
Later
