I thought I had the same problem as this thread, since I just upgraded my kernel to 2.6.9-gentoo-r1, but it seems it's slightly different...

My kernel has two names, apparently. In some places, like the ebuild, grub and the listing in /usr/src, the name is 2.6.9-gentoo-r1. In others, like when it finishes booting and shows the kernel version, and in /lib/modules/, it's 2.6.9-gentoo-r1n.

This is causing some problems with nvidia in particular, which installed in /lib/modules/2.6.9-gentoo-r1, whereas all the other modules are in /lib/modules/2.6.9-gentoo-r1n. So the system can't find nvidia, and thus can't load it.

No love.

Still can't find the module.

Make sure you have CONFIG_LOCALVERSION unset. You may have it set to 'n', which may be causing the weirdness.

That was it.

I imagine what happened is that when I did "make oldconfig" and it prompted for a value, I must have put an "n" instead of no value.

Thanks!
