Hi Folks ;

I have a Router running Gentoo;
It serves dhcp,apache..

My local network got the IP-Range 192.168.99.0 / 255.255.255.0 .

Now I wanna use the Range 6.6.6.0 - 6.6.6.255 ;
because is looks a kind of nice :roll: ;

I used some IP<->Netmask calculators to figure out which netmask i have to use, and came to this sollution;

iprange := 6.6.6.0 - 6.6.6.255
broadcast := 6.6.6.255
netmask := 255.0.0.0 // or with an other calculator: 255.128.0.0

So far so good ;;
[PROBLEM]
when i set the ip of the networkcard, which is connected to the local network to 6.6.6.99 ..... and restart my dhcpd with those new settings, it stops when it's restarting!

My syslog says, that the netmask is not correct !! but every calculator I use, gives a netmask like 255.0.0.0 or 255.128.0.0 out.

HELP ! HOW CAN I GET THE IP-RANGE 6.6.6.0 TO WORK ???

If 6.6.6.0 is the network, then 255.255.255.0 is the netmask. If you aren't familiar with netmasks, check out app-text/ipcalc.

you can't have a mask like 255.255.255.0 with a class A! your mask is 255.0.0.0! ;)

Perhaps you should read up on networking a bit more. 6.6.6.0 and 255.255.255.0 is a valid network. 6.0.0.0 and 255.255.255.0 wouldn't be.

Silly me. Unless you are going to be using that network on a non-public network (i.e., computers with those addresses won't see the internet) then you should really stick to private addresses. 10.0.0.0, 172.16.0.0, and 192.168.0.0.

Using a "real" network that isn't yours on a public network will most likely cause problems.

THAT is a fine answer !
Now it is falling like ³&% out of my head!

That's why my network i cut of the internet ;
Damn.

Thanks again !
I'll use a network like 10.0.0.0 .
:lol:
