Is it only me who thinks that amsn is bloatware? The interface is horrible!

in a way yes. I prefer gaim, but there is some annoying things with Gaim that still leads me to use amsn.

if you can solve this for me then goodbye amsn.

In amsn the taskbar for that conv flashes for a notification. But all I can get gaim to do is re-focus I do not like it when hte window comes to the front (esp when I am writing a report for work)

If there is a way to configure gaim to just flash the conversation bar at teh bottom rather than a re-focus then as I said, goodbye amsn (that really is the only reason)

You can get gaim to add a letter like a * to the beginning of the taskbar icon when you get a new message, as well as a number which tells you how many new messages you have. You can set this by enabling the message notification plugin in gaim's preferences. And if you are using KDE, gaim can make the tasbar icon flash different colours (like in Windows XP.)

yea I installed this new version and it's GREAT!!!
with the new plugin system the only thing I like about gaim (history displayed in chat window) is there

after getting used to amsn's friendly name feature, I just can't stand gaim.
plus I want to see other ppl's custom emoticons

except I have one problem...
systray icon seems to be broken for some reason
it just shows a white box now :(

At the beginning, when I upgraded it to 0.94, it worked. for some reason now it doesn't work... but I noticed something very interesting: when I try to make it run.. it doesn't appear. However, there is a lot of network activity.. and I wonder if the aMSN has some malicious code no one has seen yet.

I'm getting segment faults when running this (if you notice it's opening and closing try running amsn from a terminal). I'm running nitro3 on the 2.6.9 kernel. Latest xorg and nvidia drivers. nptl is on.

casper2601: type "emerge -pv amsn" and read the output to see if you actually have amsn 0.94

If not, then do a "emerge sync" first to get the new ebuild and then "emerge -pv amsn" again. You should see that portage wants to upgrade amsn.

Ok so i tried what you said, and emerge still only see amsn .94. So maybe it is not an option via emerge. Its annoying because everytime i open amsn it tell me to get an update at their website (sourceforce.net) But i am a noob and dont know how to download it, and install it to the appropriate place :(

Could you give me a small set of instructions to do this? would be greatly apprciated!

0.94 _is_ the latest version. :wink:

EDIT: I just checked the current Portage status for AMSN, and it seems 0.94 is currently masked. If you want to emerge it, you'll have to do the following first as root:
Code:
$ echo "net-im/amsn ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords

Then just try to emerge -u amsn, and it should work.

when I do ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge i get:

Code:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) net-im/amsn-0.94 to /

Waiting on (hardlink) lockfile: (one '.' per 3 seconds)
This is a feature to prevent distfiles corruption.
/usr/lib/portage/bin/clean_locks can fix stuck locks.
Lockfile: /usr/portage/distfiles/.locks/amsn-0_94.tar.gz.portage_lockfile
........

what is this, never got this before...

It does not help even if I clean the locks either

You should NOT emerge in that way! Either make you whole system ~x86 or put the ebuild in /etc/package.unmask, but don't use ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge <something>, it hoses things, and that's guaranteed.

/etc/portage/package.unmask is just bogus, it really never works, and the accept keywords thing is a much better option that truly works for me..

no, this prob does not have anything to do with my emerge options, at least that seems very unlikely

Then use package.keywords and add ~x86 as a keyword.

I'm not saying that your problem HAS to do with it, I'm just saying that you WILL get problems doing what you do, but you don't have to believe me of course.
