I've been trying out nitro-sources, and I've noticed that whereas before I usually had 0M of swap used according to gkrellm, I now usually hover around 30MB of swap used. Granted, my laptop only has 256MB of PC100 so even before using nitro it sometimes used swap, but with nothing but my wm open with nitro I get about 20M of usage.

Does nitro prioritize some things and put them in swap to free up real RAM? If so is it still worth it to use nitro considering I have a laptop and more swap usage means decreased battery life?

You might have something called /proc/sys/vm/swappiness, play around with that :)

Mine is set to 60, and I usually do not use any swap... actually, I do use 1M at the moment...

To change the value, just pipe some echoed text there.

Nope doesn't exist for me. Any idea why?

Code:

prophet@tuxedo prophet $ cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
cat: /proc/sys/vm/swappiness: No such file or directory

doesn't exist here either :-/

Your statement seems right. Only half of my memory is used and it still uses 100MB swap.

IIRC, nitro is based on -ck.

And Con Kolivas is, AFAIK, a big supporter of the usage of swap. So thats probably the reason.
