Can any recommed a good monitoring program/tool that can keep an eye on my services on several different servers?
Only requirement is that it must be simple to use/configure and stable

It can be run as a server, so you can open many clients on a single desktop to monitor all of your machines.

Nagios is nice as it has a web interfaces, can check just about any services, but is is a bit of a pain to get it configured to begin with. Once you got the basics it's easy to add new services, but the first set of configs are going to be hard.

How does nagios on one machine get information about cpu and disk from a remote server?

We do it by setting an ssh trust between the machines and Nagios runs the scripts on the remote machiens to look at disk space, cpu, etc. For network services it'll test the ports and make sure they fully open for things it understands like pop, smtp, http, etc.

I have used nrpe in the past to do this, it installs when you emerge nagios. You need to install nrpe on your remote machines and your nagios program will send it's commands to the nrpe service on the remote machines. If you do this you will want to set up a firewall or other service that will only accept connections to your nrpe ports from the monitor server(s) and not the general public. Otherwise they can send a flood of queries to your servers and create a DoS attack.
SSH is also another method but some people do not like setting up trusted keys on a network as if they gain access to the monitoring server they can get access to every other machine on your network that you have trusted keys set up with. |
