PowerDNS Installation

I'n trying to install a DNS server. I want the most easy to configure DNS. so PowerDNS seemed like the best choice since it works off MySQL.

However, when i've emerged pdns, i start it using /etc/init.d/pdns start, i can't tell if its started or not.

I don't see it in netstat.
It gives no errors. The readme file is the worse thing ever.

Has anyone installed this in gentoo?

I've also installed http://poweradmin.org/ and seems to be working fine. It adds the dns entry into mysql.

Also after emerging pdns, is there anything else i need to edit?
any of these files:
/etc/resolve.conf ?
/etc/hosts ?

I'm new at this. DNS has always been a mystery. My domain name is about to expire so i thought i would get into DNS also

It starts pdns_server, it gives the cammand prompt right away. the process does start. no errors, no output.
and once again nothing on netstat.
